Dual N-Back Training Options
Here you choose the type of n-back training you want to do.
‘2G’ is a second generation development of the original Jaeggi et al (2009) dual n-back training task. It is the traditional dual n-back but with interference control (which improves n-back training) and speed/rhythm control.
‘Stroop’ is a unique n-back on the market that maximizes the need for inhibition of distracting information via what is called the Stroop Effect.
Both 2G and Stroop games come with the money-back IQ and working memory increase guarantees.
What Do You Do In 2G Dual N-Back Training?
The Dual Training Mode works in exactly the same way as Visual Mode and Audio Mode, starting with an ‘n-back’ = 1. The difference is that you now have to keep track of not just one modality but two – simultaneously! At the same time as the square moves from location to location, you hear phonologically distinct letters. You must press the visual icon (left) if there is a visual match and the audio icon (right) if there is a letter match. If there is a match for both at the same time, you must press both the two icons together. (You may need to do this in rapid succession depending on the sensitivity of your screen). Once you do well enough at N=1, you progress to N=2. In the 2-back example below there are 2 visual (square) matches and 2 verbal (letter) matches in 6 moves.
If you reach a certain level of proficiency in both the visual task (changing square) and the audio task (changing letters), the n-back level for the next set of 20 moves increases by one. If perform less well the n-back level decreases by one. Otherwise the n-back level stays the same. After each 10 block training session a window will appear giving you graphical feedback on how well you have done, as described above. Close the graph, and click on the ‘N=x’ arrow button (that indicates your current n-back level) to take you to the Session window. You can check out your performance stats here.
Your aim: Increase your n-back level and 2G score
Your aim over the 40 10-block half sessions of training – spaced out over 4-8 weeks – is to increase your n-back level – a measure of your working memory capacity. The n-back level could increase all the way to a 5-back or beyond as the working memory training takes effect. With more working memory capacity, you have effectively more ‘RAM power’ in your brain, and your intelligence will increase. By selecting the Hyper N-Back option (stopwatch icon) during training, you can increase your 2G score.

What Do You Do In Stroop Dual N-Back Training?
Stroop dual n-back training is dual N-back training with arrows that can appear in 4 locations, and words that can appear in 4 colors. There is no audio. The dual n-back task itself that can come in 4 combinations, indicated by the response key icons at the bottom of the game screen.
Direction and Color: In this mode (shown in the screenshot here), you must look for n-back matches for the direction of the arrow (ignoring the arrow’s location) and the color of the word, (ignoring the word meaning).
Direction and Word Meaning: The icon for word meaning is ‘ABC’. In this mode you must look for n-back matches for the direction of the arrow (ignoring the arrow’s location) and the meaning of the word – i.e. what you read
Location and Color: The icon for location is the standard location icon for 2G n-back. In this mode, you must look for n-back matches for the location of the arrow (ignoring the arrow’s direction) and the color of the word, (ignoring the word meaning).
Location and Word Meaning: In this mode you must look for n-back matches for the location of the arrow (ignoring the arrow’s direction) and the meaning of the word – i.e. what you read (ignoring the color of the word).
Any of these combinations can appear (randomly) on each block you play the game. This game can create a lot of interference from the second dimension of the stimuli, which helps with IQ transfer and the strengthening of executive control.
